An homage to Ray Charles and other R&B flavored Jazz artists, here is a first chart for a beginning jazz band. It is written in the key of Bb and introduces some basic chromatic notes. The 1st trumpet high note is Eb. "SideSteppin!" can be played with as few as 3 tpts, 1 tb, 2 alto, 1 tenor and rhythm, or you may use augmented instrumentation which includes flute, clarinet and TC baritone. | Computer File |

Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child by Ryan Dignan |
If Santana did a version of a spiritual, scored with a jazz band, it would sound something like this. Lots of doubling make this chart a cinch for almost any instrumentation, and it has a groove that won’t quit. Doable with 2 tpts, 2 altos, 1 tenor, 1 trombone, piano (with bass doubled), and drums. Optional instrumentation parts for Fl, Cl, TC baritone, Eb Trombone and tuba. | Level: 1 |

Stealth Attack by Ryan Dignan |
This piece is loud, fast, fun and sounds more technical than it actually is. Using mostly the first 5 notes of a C concert blues scale and a 3/4 time signature, "Stealth Attack" combines the nostalgia of a 60's spy theme and the power of a pep band arrangement. Mostly 1, 2 and 3 parts, it will work well with any combination of instruments. | Computer File |
